On Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 12:00 to 7:30 p.m.,
theAcademy Art Museum will host its annual Paint the Town fundraiser in
Easton, MD. This year’s theme is PAINT THE TOWN MOROCCAN! The event promises an
exotic adventure to the Kingdom of Morocco.
The museum will display its expanding collection of
Moroccan artifacts to highlighting the rich cultural traditions of Morocco. The
event will include an authentic Moroccan souk where visitors can become
acquainted with Morocco’s famous bargaining process while shopping for goods
over a cup of mint tea and pastries. Souks and informal markets remain a major
feature in Moroccan life and are among the country’s greatest attractions.
There will also be a decorative Nomadic Tent, staged performances of
traditional Moroccan music and a fashion show.
Events will kick off on Friday, May 4, at 4:00pm, when
the Museum will host a lecture entitled “Morocco: America’s Oldest Friend”, by
Former US Ambassador to Morocco, Edward Gabriel. The lecture is an opportunity
for participants to learn fascinating facts about Morocco’s role in protecting
the Jewish population during WWII, protecting women’s rights in the Arab world,
and setting the pace for fashion, food and décor in the past decade.
On Saturday, events include a musical concert at the
Avalon theatre, featuring enchanting music from the five key regions of
Morocco. In a unique ceremony, and as was the case in New Jersey in 2009 and
2010, the Moroccan flag will raised over city at noon.
Visitors could then return to the Museum for appetizers,
a viewing of contemporary Moroccan art and a seated dinner under a Moroccan
tent.
Other events include a Moroccan exhibition in the
Spitaleri Gallery and Atrium Gallery, featuring the artwork of contemporary
visual artist Hamid Kachmar, as well as Moroccan artwork on loanfrom The
World Bank Art Program and contemporary photography by Moroccan artist Lalla
Essaydi, on loan from the International Finance Corporation.
Visitors will enjoy the presence of the” Sounds of
Morocco band & Moroccan – American singer, Amir Ali, who will entertain
visitors with a variety of kinds of music representing different regions of
Morocco
“We urge people Moroccan to come in big numbers and
showcase the beauty of Morocco by wearing traditional clothes, especially our
famous and celebrated Moroccan caftan. The goal of this kind of events is to
familiarize the American Public with the Moroccan culture and provide them with
a foretaste of our rich and century-old traditions,” said Hassan Samrhouni,
president of Washington Moroccan Club and CEO of Casablanca Travel and Tours, a
tour company that specializes in tours to the Kingdom of Morocco.
This kind of events, are what is needs to be done in
every corner of the United States in order to make Americans more acquainted
with our country, its history and its relationship with the United States,” he
added.
